Taylor Swift explained the theme and meaning behind Fate of Ophelia, the first single from her latest album The Life of a Showgirl.
After TS12 crashed Spotify upon its release and Swifties were desperately Googling Hamlet to connect the references in her latest song, the 14-time Grammy winner was sweeping hearts with a series of interviews.
"Ophelia went mad and then died," a Heart Breakfast radio show host in London on October 3, inquired the pop star.
"Yeah. She was driven mad by love and it's so the play on it," the Love Story songstress responded. "The hook is like you know you like someone comes into your life and rescues you from the fate of being driven mad by love right."
For the unversed, Hamlet is a famous tragedy play by William Shakespeare. It tells the story of Prince Hamlet of Denmark and Ophelia, a young noblewoman and Hamlet’s love interest in the play, which explores themes of revenge, madness, love, betrayal, and mortality.
Throughout the play Ophelia experiences deep emotional turmoil after her father’s death and Hamlet’s erratic behavior, ultimately, descending into madness and drowns in a river.
Whether her death was accidental or suicide is left ambiguous, but it’s tragic and symbolic of her broken spirit.
Taylor basically took Ophelia’s story and flipped it. Instead of being doomed, drowned and deceived, the Reputation hitmaker sings she is saved from that fate by someone who comes for her, Travis Kelce.
