Dear Ed,
In today’s issue (26 September), I read the article ‘Stop calling it a school’ by Yumna Zahid Ali and my reaction was mixed. As a retired teacher, I agree with the writer about the quality of the majority of teachers inflicted on students. Most teachers are untrained and have no empathy with students. They are there only because they cannot get another job, which is the most worrying part. The future of our country is placed in the hands of people who are not competent and who are so bitter with their own lives that they take out their frustrations on poor students.
However, I think teachers should be allowed to discipline students in suitable ways. Nowadays, the trend is not to say anything to the children as it is considered bad for mental health, and some modern schools take this so far that teachers who dare to correct students’ behaviour are dismissed. Such schools are producing entitled future citizens who do not care about anything and have no values. I feel there should be a balance and that teachers should be trained to handle students firmly but compassionately so as not to create spoiled future citizens.

Importance of mother tongue
Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to draw attention to the importance of the mother tongue in Balochistan. The mother tongue is the first language a child learns and it plays an active role in shaping identity and culture. In Balochistan, languages like Balochi are widely spoken. Unfortunately, these languages are not taught in schools; instead, only the national languages, Urdu and English, are given focus.
Many students face difficulties in understanding their lessons, which affects their confidence and learning abilities. Ignoring the mother tongue also creates a gap between parents and children, as parents cannot help children with studies if the language is unfamiliar. It is, therefore, the duty of the government and education authorities to promote the mother tongue as a subject. I hope the authorities will take immediate and serious steps towards addressing this issue.
