Prominent political figures from across the ideological spectrum have united in condemnation following the shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, September 10.
The 31-year-old was shot while he was addressing a crowd at Utah University.
The incident prompted immediate response from leaders at the highest levels of government.
While posting on Truth Social, President Donald Trump wrote, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”
Vice President JD Vance also condemned the incident and shared how deeply his views resonated with Kirk, “We talked through everything, from the strategy to the fundraising to the grassroots of the movement he knew so well. He introduced me to some of the people who would run my campaign and also to Donald Trump Jr.”
“Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. I am on more than a few group chats with Charlie and people he introduced me to over the years. We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other's chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life,” he added.
Representatives of the Democratic party also extended their condemnation representing political unity across the country.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “The horrific shooting today at Utah Valley University is reprehensible. Political violence has absolutely no place in our nation. All Americans should pray for Charlie Kirk’s recovery and hold the entire UVU community in our hearts as they endure the trauma of this gun violence.”
Former Vice President Kamala Harris also echoed this sentiment in her statement, “I am deeply disturbed by the shooting in Utah. Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family.”
She also strongly reproved the political violence stating, “Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.”
Updating on the investigation into the incident, FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed that the agency is “working alongside our local and state law enforcement partners in Utah to fully investigate and seek justice in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.”
