King Charles was pulled into unexpected royal drama after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s visit to Jamaica sparked political panic.
The King, who is Jamaica’s head of state, reportedly received an urgent phone call from Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness after photos of the Sussexes with him at the One Love film premiere raised eyebrows last year, according to GB News.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed smiling alongside Holness in Kingston in January 2024.
But behind the scenes, the moment caused confusion.
It was initially believed that the couple had been invited by the prime minister, when in fact the real invitation had come from their friend and neighbor Brian Robbins, Paramount’s CEO, and his wife Tracy James.
Theresa Roberts, Jamaica’s Ambassador/Special Investment Envoy for Culture and Arts in the UK, told the Mail via GB News: “The government were really annoyed about the premiere. They [Meghan and Harry] were invited to attend, but not by the prime minister. He became the centre of attention because it was said that he was 'cosying up' with Meghan and Harry. That wasn’t the truth.”
Roberts added that Holness quickly contacted Charles to explain: “He did say he didn't expect to be caught up in that thing because he had nothing to do with it.”
