US President Donald Trump was one most prominent attendees of the 2025 US Open men’s final on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
The gruelling finale was played between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, with Spanish player defeating the Italian player securing 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The presence of Trump at the Alcaraz victory drew a chorus of boos and cheers from the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd.
Trump arrived with family and cabinet members prompting a high security alert and VIP protocol.
Due to a high security protocols, the highly anticipated match was delayed by 30 minutes, leaving tennis fans in huge disappointment.
His presence became a spectacle unto itself.
After Trump’s arrival on the stadium’s jumbotron during the national anthem, loud boos erupted from the crowd, mixed with cheers.
The same reaction from the crowd was noticed when footage of Trump displayed on the big screen later in the finale.
As reported by Fox News, broadcasters were issued a directive by the US Tennis Association (USTA) that reads, “With respect to Broadcast Coverage, the President will be shown on the World Feed and the Ashe Court Feed during the opening anthem ceremony. We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage.”
Despite the polarised reaction from the crowd, the eventual champion, Alcaraz called it a “privilege” to play in front of Mr. President.
While talking to Guardian, he said, “I think that it is a privilege for the tournaments having the president from every country just to support the tournament, to support tennis, and to support the match.”
“For me, playing in front of him … I will try not to think about it,” he added.
