Dear Editor,

As an 18-year-old student, I was deeply shaken after reading ‘Climate apartheid - the ugly, undeniable truth’ by Arslan Mirza (22 August issue). The article made me realise that climate change is not some far-off problem, it is very much here and is destroying lives in Pakistan right now. What struck me most was the writer’s point about the divide between the rich and the poor, and how, for the rich, climate change is just higher electricity bills or a trip abroad when the heat gets unbearable. Unfortunately, most of the people in our country are very poor and have no way of combating the threat of climate change. It feels unfair that those who contribute least to global emissions are suffering the most!

I belong to a generation that has grown up with news of floods, heatwaves, droughts and smog choking our cities. Ask anyone in Lahore and they would tell you how bad the smog problem is in winter! Young people like me may not have political power to change things yet, but we do have awareness and energy. We can talk, share, organise, and keep reminding our leaders that this crisis is about our future.

Thank you for publishing such a powerful piece. I hope it sparks more conversations among the youth, because this is our fight as we will face the consequences of global warming.

Dear Ed,

In today’s Us (22 Aug), I read about the Amish people, who live such a simple and healthy life without depending on modern comforts like electricity and television. I was amazed, to say the least. When I looked up more about them, I learnt something surprising: they have very few cases of cancer in their community because they eat only what they grow. They keep animals on their farms, feed them organic food, and stay away from harmful processed products.

This really made me think. If they can live long, healthy lives by eating natural food, why can’t we? I would like to urge all young readers to think about their lifestyle. Try growing a few vegetables at home, even in small pots, and encourage your parents to choose fresh food over packaged items. Most importantly, avoid junk food because it may taste good, but in the long run it damages our health.
