f.e.

With summer break over and monsoon clouds rolling in, the season now swings between sticky heat and sudden downpours. If you’re stuck indoors, it’s the perfect chance to stream a good movie and let the hours pass. Or if you’re in the mood to step out, you can still catch a few of these on the big screen before they leave cinemas. From dinosaurs to superheroes, reboots to eerie comedies, this week You! rounds up the top films to watch…

Jurassic World Rebirth

Set five years after the events of ‘Jurassic World Dominion’, ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ marked a bold departure from the franchise’s previous tone. Scarlett Johansson played Zora Bennett – a covert operations specialist sent by a pharmaceutical company to extract data from a remote island overrun with surviving dinosaurs. Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by franchise veteran David Koepp, the film leaned heavily into survival-action territory, with a cast that also included Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and Rupert Friend. While long-time fans debated the absence of original characters, the fresh approach and more grounded tone gave the ‘dino’ franchise a much-needed jolt. Still playing in cinemas, it’s streaming on Peacock before shifting to Prime Video for an extended run.

Superman

James Gunn’s much-anticipated reboot, simply titled ‘Superman’, took flight this summer, becoming the third big-screen iteration of the DC hero in less than two decades. This version set out to do things differently, with David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent with a blend of charm and emotional vulnerability, balancing his human and Kryptonian identities. Rachel Brosnahan’s sharp, assertive Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s grounded, menacing Lex Luthor gave the film depth beyond its spectacle. Gunn’s world-building included lesser-known DC characters like Mr Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi, and even Superman’s loyal dog, Krypto. Balancing action with sincerity, the film stood out as a confident step forward for the DC cinematic universe. It continues in cinemas, but for those watching at home, Prime Video already has it on offer.

F1: The Movie

Brad Pitt strapped in as veteran driver Sonny Hayes in ‘F1: The Movie’, coaxed out of retirement to mentor a young prodigy while chasing one last shot at glory. Director Joseph Kosinski used real Grand Prix circuits and live race footage, so the film carried the roar of the track and the sweat of the pit lane. The story went beyond speed to explore legacy, ego, and the cost of ambition. While running in theatres, it’s also up for rental on Prime Video, with an Apple TV+ launch on the horizon.

Materialists

Celine Song followed up ‘Past Lives’ with a rom-com that sparkled with bite. Dakota Johnson played a high-end New York matchmaker in ‘Materialists’ juggling wealthy clients while her own romantic entanglements spun out of control. Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal brought charisma and chaos, turning every scene into a cocktail of wit, attraction, and awkward tension. Stylish, sharp, and emotionally layered, it reimagined the rom-com for a new era. Alongside its cinema run, it’s already available to rent or buy on Prime Video, with Max expected to pick it up later this year.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

Horror returned with the reboot-slash-sequel ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, it brought both suspense and emotional depth to a story first told in 1997. The cast featured rising stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, and Jonah Hauer-King, alongside nostalgic appearances from Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. The plot followed five young adults haunted by a deadly accident they covered up a year earlier – and the masked figure who now knew their secret. With updated stakes and psychological nuance, the reboot managed to revive the franchise for a more anxious generation. It is set for digital rental and purchase before eventually streaming on Netflix soon.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, widely considered Marvel’s most promising reboot in years. Directed by Matt Shakman, it reintroduced Marvel’s first family with Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The film blended superhero action with cosmic storytelling, introducing the Silver Surfer and teasing Galactus while grounding it all in family dynamics. Still in cinemas, the film is set for digital purchase in September, with streaming on Disney+ expected by November 2025.
