Prince William and Kate Middleton are set to upgrade their living arrangements, moving from Adelaide Cottage to the grander Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park.
This eight-bedroom estate boasts tennis courts, a barrel dance floor, and plenty of space for their family. As they prepare for the move, Princess Kate has been scouring the royal estate's vast storage facility, affectionately known as "California," for the perfect furniture pieces.
Located on the Windsor Castle estate, the "California" warehouse is a massive storage unit built on the site of former disused walled gardens near Frogmore Cottage.
This enormous facility, approved in 2019, spans the size of eight tennis courts and houses a wide range of royal possessions, including surplus furniture, artworks, and gifts not valuable enough for the Royal Collection.
According to royal commentator Richard Kay, "It's called California because it's vast, like the state of California."
Princess Kate won't need to purchase any furniture for her new home, thanks to the extensive collection stored in the California warehouse. Kay notes that she's likely to choose a large dining table for the new home, among other pieces.
"The Waleses are on the move yet again, and to the surprise of many, they have selected another home within Windsor Great Park," Kay said.
"They're not coming back to their fabulous Kensington Palace apartment, but they're upscaling from little Adelaide Cottage to the much more impressive Forest Lodge."
The Prince and Princess of Wales initially moved to Windsor in 2022, seeking greater privacy for their family. Forest Lodge, their new residence, is expected to provide them with ample space and seclusion.
The couple will pay market rent for the property, a departure from their previous arrangement at Adelaide Cottage.
