Pakistan signed 189 int’l pacts in 2024-25, NA told

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar on Monday informed the National Assembly that a total of 189 international treaties and agreements were signed or ratified by Pakistan during the fiscal year 2024-25.

In a written reply during the Question Hour, he provided a country-wise breakdown of these 189 treaties and agreements. According to the details, Pakistan signed 55 treaties/agreements with China, 30 with Azerbaijan, 25 with Turkiye, 20 with Kazakhstan, 11 with Tajikistan, 10 with Russia, 7 with the United Nations, 4 with Uzbekistan, 3 each with Sri Lanka and the UAE, and 2 each with Argentina, Brazil, Iraq, Italy, Malaysia, Rwanda, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

One treaty/agreement each was signed with Bangladesh, Cuba, Djibouti, France, Kenya, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Oman, the Philippines, Singapore, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Uganda, Uruguay, and Vietnam.

In another written reply to a question from Shehla Raza, Dar gave details about Pakistani prisoners in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. He stated that over 15,953 Pakistanis are imprisoned in these regions, and Pakistan has extradition treaties with only three countries there Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

He gave a country-by-country breakdown: Iraq: 81 prisoners, no extradition treaty; Syria: no prisoners, no treaty; Jordan: 8 prisoners, no treaty; Lebanon: no prisoners, no treaty; Egypt: 12 prisoners, no treaty; Bahrain: 581 prisoners, no treaty; Oman: 252 prisoners, no treaty; Kuwait: 50 prisoners, extradition treaty in place; Qatar: 599 prisoners, no treaty; Saudi Arabia: 10,279 prisoners, extradition treaty in place; UAE: 3,523 prisoners, extradition treaty in place; New Zealand: no prisoners, no treaty; Australia: 27 prisoners, no treaty; South Korea: 7 prisoners, no treaty; Japan: 16 prisoners, no treaty; Malaysia: 459 prisoners, no treaty; Thailand: 35 prisoners, no treaty; Cambodia: 22 prisoners, no treaty; Philippines: 1 prisoner, no treaty; Vietnam: 1 prisoner, no treaty; Myanmar, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei: no prisoners, no treaties.
