Indonesians are widely using the pirate flag from the globally recognized Japanese anime “One Piece” which became a symbol of political protest in Indonesia.
However, this move sparks sharp criticism from government officials who view it as a threat to national integrity.
The flag features a skull wearing a straw hat representing the protagonist of the anime Monkey D. Luffy.
It is now appearing on cars, buildings, and doorways across Indonesia.
Earlier, Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto called on the nation to fly its national red and white flag ahead of the country’s Independence Day on August 17, 2025.
However, criticizing the centralized government led by Prabowo, people chose to raise these pirate flags showcasing their discontent.
The manga and anime franchise, One Piece, has a massive fan base in Indonesia. The story of the anime revolves around the crew of pirates fighting against oppressive regimes.
This central theme of the anime aligns with the critics of the government leading to the adoption of the flag.
The display of the flag provoked several reactions from the officials.
Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad condemned the display of flags as “an attempt to divide the nation.”
A lawmaker from the Golkar Party, Firman Soebagyo, went further, stating that the display of the flag can amount to treason.
According to Indonesian law, placing any flag or symbol before the national flag is a crime and violations can lead to severe punishment including five years in prison or imposition of a fine of nearly $31,000.
