Dear Ed,
In the issue of 25 July, I read with interest about the oldest known living land animal, Jonathan - the 193-year-old tortoise - in the section ‘Bits ‘n’ Pieces’. I enjoy the variety of ‘bits’ and ‘pieces’ of information in this section. When I come across something that interests me, I often do my own research to learn more. I also read the opinion piece by Mariam Rasheed, ‘Babar Azam and the power of belonging’, and it made me feel that Babar is the best cricketer Pakistan has produced. However, in terms of overall performance, I believe that honour should go to Wasim Akram.

Hi Ed,
In today’s Us (1 August), the cover story ‘Dangerous Addictions’ by Ayesha Pervez is a wake-up call for parents, children, the police, and educationists. Young people from middle and lower-middle-class backgrounds are falling prey to gutkha addiction, while those from elite circles have easy access to drugs like meth, heroin, and cocaine. Sadly, the government is doing little to address this crisis, which is destroying the future of our youth - largely because those involved in drug distribution are powerful and influential. It is high time something is done to tackle this growing menace. Thank you, Ayesha, for courageously highlighting this important issue.

Awareness campaigns needed
Dear Editor,
In the ‘Us mail’ section, I read the letter by Nida M. Azeem from Pidrak on the need for career counselling. I agree wholeheartedly with her, but I would like to point out that it is the parents who need counselling. From the moment their children start going to school, they begin telling them what they should become—usually a doctor. So, it’s not enough to have career counsellors; it’s the mindset that needs to change. I recall my principal once told my father that I would do well in the arts, and my scores in class tests clearly reflected that. However, my father disagreed, made me take the pre-medical group, and became angry when I didn’t achieve the required scores for medical school. I went on to complete my BBA with flying colours and am now employed at a very respectable firm. Yet, my father remains disappointed and often tells my children how I let him down. He is now pressuring my seven-year-old to become a doctor! I believe awareness campaigns on television and social media are urgently needed to educate parents and encourage them to support their children’s true interests and abilities.
