Pakistan records 23% above average rainfall in July 2025

LAHORE: During July 2025, the country witnessed 23 per cent more rains as compared to the normal rainfall while 0.1C increase was also witnessed in the average temperature during the month.

A report of MET office revealed that the national mean temperature of 32.45C was more than the country’s average temperature of 31.98C. It said the daytime (maximum) temperature of 36.85C at country-level happened to be slightly cooler by -0.3C than the country-average of 37.19C while the country-level night time (minimum) temperature of 25.91C was warmer by +0.6C than the countrywide average of 25.27C.

The hottest day of the month was observed at Chilas (Gilgit-Baltistan) on 5th July when it recorded a maximum temperature of 48.5C. Whereas the station Dalbandin, Nokkundi proved to be the warmest place with a mean monthly maximum temperature of 44.5C.

The coldest night temperature of 8.0C of the month was recorded at Parachinar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on 12 July whereas, the station Murree (Punjab) happened to be the coldest place with mean monthly minimum temperature of 15C.

The heaviest one-day rainfall of 216.8mm occurred at Sheikhupura (Punjab) on 16 July. Whereas, the station Islamabad, Zeropoint has been the wettest place with monthly total of 611.71mm.

The report said that climatologically, July was considered as a rainy month with rainfall contribution to the national annual and seasonal July-Sept (JAS) totals being 44.9 per cent and 21.3 per cent, respectively. During the month, Pakistan experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall and (extremely heavy at few places) at AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

The July 2025 with 77.7mm rainfall was above average with a positive anomaly of +23 per cent for Pakistan as a whole. Whereas a diverse situation was observed on regional scale, Punjab with the 163.50mm (+57 per cent) ranked 8th wettest (244.9mm rainfall recorded in 1978) and Gilgit Baltistan with 20.20mm (+52 per cent) both observed largely above average rainfall.

Balochistan with 39.30 (+33 per cent) and AJK with 197.70mm (+14 per cent) observed above average rainfall. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 111.50 (+5 per cent) observed near average rainfall. In contrast with the above regions, Sindh with 31.60 mm (-47 per cent) observed a well below average rainfall.

Other than the wettest station Islamabad Zero-Point, some other stations recorded significant rainfall i.e. Jhelum 594.5 mm, Chaklala Airbase 557.0 mm, Sheikhupura 538mm, Lahore, Airport 527.9 mm, Okara 494.8 mm, Lahore City 472.3 mm, Mandibahauddin 434.1 mm, Islamabad, Airport 425.4 mm, Kotli 392.4 mm, Chakwal 382.3 mm, Kakul 372.0 mm, Murree 364.0 mm, Mangla 348.6 mm, Muzaffarabad Airport 346.0 mm, Muzaffarabad City 337.3 mm, Hafizabad 308.2 mm, Narowal 308.2 mm, Attock 284.0 mm, Gujranwala 281.8 mm, Garhi Dupatta 279.5 mm, Balakot 267.0 mm, Kasur 262.6 mm and Risalpur 257.0mm.

A few stations remained absolutely dry with no rain during the month, i.e. Dalbandin, Gwadar, Jiwani, Nokkundi, Panjgur, Pasni, Turbat, whereas the stations Quetta (Sheikh Manda), Masroor recorded only traces of rainfall during the month

The report further added that during July 2025 national mean temperature of 31.41C was near average than the country-average of 31.36C with an anomaly of only +0.1°C.

A situation prevailed on regional scale i.e. Sindh with 32.88C (+0.3C), Balochistan with 32.26C(+0.4C), Punjab with 31.96C (-0.8C), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 29.17C(-0.2C), Gilgit Baltistan with 26.92C (+0.3C), Azad Jammu & Kashmir with 26.15C (+0.5C).

The mean temperature anomalies ranged from -2.0C to +2.7C in the country with those being considerably higher over western Balochistan.

The report added that the country-level monthly mean maximum (daytime) temperature of 36.85 C of the month was also near average by a slight negative anomaly of (-0.3C) than the country average of 37.19C.

So was a trend at regional scale; Punjab with 36.51C (-1.4C) ranked as 4th lowest (record 34.42C in 1978), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 34.57C (-0.7°C), Sindh with 37.41°C (-0.2°C), Azad Jammu & Kashmir with 31.36C (0.0C), Balochistan with 38.38 °C (+0.1°C), Gilgit Baltistan with 33.74C (-0.1 C) all recorded near average maximum temperatures.

The country’s monthly mean minimum (night-time) temperature of 25.91°C in the month was warmer, by +0.6C, than average 25.27C and ranked the 6th highest of the past 65 years (the record is 26.63°C in 2024).

A similar trend was found across the regions i.e. Sindh with 28.29C (+0.9 C) ranked 4th highest (the record being 29.25C in 2024), Balochistan with 26.08 C(+0.7 C) ranked 7th highest (record is 26.77C in 2024 ), AJK with 20.81C (+1.0C) ranked 8th highest (record is 21.29C in 1976 ), Gilgit Baltistan with 20.03C (+0.7C) ranked 10th highest (the record being 22.04C in 1977 ) all exhibited warmer than average minimum temperatures. Whereas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 23.75C (+0.3C) and Punjab with 27.34C (+0.3 C), recorded near average with slight positive anomalies.
