This refers to the letter ‘Window dressing?’ (July 6, 2025) by Dr Najeeb A Khan, which was written in response to a letter I previously wrote about austerity for ordinary people while the elites pocket massive pay hikes and privileges. The writer argues that the high salaries and perks of our high ranking officers could actually help counter the negative image of Pakistan and he also mentions that salaries of bureaucrats are high throughout South Asia.

Unless the writer is being sarcastic, I would respectfully point out that the negative perception of Pakistan’s economy and governance is backed by the facts. Defence is the only exception. By masking our grave failings and/or making light of them, we would only be fooling ourselves while also negating possible reform. This would be highly unfortunate.
