A tragic building collapse recently occurred in Lyari, Karachi, claiming at least 27 innocent lives, while several others. Some reports say that the building had been declared unsafe before the collapse and evacuation notices had been issued around two years earlier. Now, the authorities have identified over 570 such buildings in Karachi. Seeing so many damaged buildings still occupied by families, it is evident that countless people are currently living in danger. This tragedy once again exposes the failure of the provincial government.
The authorities were responsible for relocating people from unsafe structures, yet no meaningful action, other than the evacuation notice, appears to have been taken. Has our government become so ineffective that it cannot protect its people from collapsing buildings? I strongly urge the authorities to take immediate action. Those living in such dangerous conditions must be moved out before it is too late.
