Orlando Bloom recalls believing ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ idea was absurd

Orlando Bloom opened up about his breakout rule Pirates of the Caribbean and how he initially thought the project's result will be fruitless.

Bloom, who played Will Turner in the franchise, admitted that he thought the film idea was ridiculous.

In an interview with L’Officiel, the Troy star spoke about his role in The Curse of the Black Pearl.

"My agent said, 'Disney wants to make a movie based on a theme park ride', and I was like, 'This is crazy?" he said.

Back at that time, he was also filming the 2003 movie Ned Kelly alongside actor Geoffery Rush, who also starred in the hit films. He was the one who ended up convincing Bloom to take the role.

"Geoffrey Rush says I owe him 10 percent," he quipped.

Elsewhere, the Kingdom of Heaven actor also spoke about how he and his co-actor Johnny Depp (Jack Sparrow) were inspired by each other’s performances.

"At their core, Will and Captain Jack are similar. Will has heroic moments, but so does Jack," Bloom said, adding, "Will and Elizabeth Swann’s relationship is the heart of the trilogy," a reference to the character played by Keira Knightley in the films.

The film spawned four follow-ups, three directed by Gore Verbinski as part of a trilogy, and the remaining two as standalone sequels.
