Lead adulteration in turmeric, particularly with lead chromate to enhance colour, is a serious but underreported health problem in South Asia. Even low levels of lead exposure can severely affect foetal brain development and long-term cognitive health in children.
Given the scale of turmeric consumption and the urgency of the issue, I believe this story deserves wider coverage in Pakistan. Health authorities must also come up with ways to deal with the problem.
