Rugby coach Deventer joins hands with SBP

LAHORE: Renowned international rugby coach Ludwiche Von Deventer from South Africa has arrived in Pakistan to contribute to the development of rugby as part of a year-long initiative.

He met with Director General Sports Punjab Khizar Afzaal Chaudhry at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday to discuss plans for advancing the sport in the region.

Director General Sports Punjab Khizar Afzaal Chaudhry expressed his enthusiasm for Von Deventer’s appointment, emphasizing the positive impact of his vast experience on rugby in Pakistan. “Ludwiche has coached several countries, including the United States, India, and Uganda, and will bring his expertise to Pakistan for one year,” Chaudhry said.

Von Deventer is tasked with preparing five teams from all provinces and organizing rugby matches at Punjab Stadium. “The seasoned rugby coach will create an excellent rugby team for the country,” Chaudhry added.

The initiative aims to build a strong foundation for rugby by focusing on U-14, U-16, and U-17 players. According to Chaudhry, Von Deventer will work closely with these age groups to create a pool of talented young players, ensuring sustained growth for the sport. Chaudhry also highlighted the role of Sports Board Punjab in promoting rugby across the province.

On his arrival, Ludwiche Von Deventer expressed his excitement about working in Pakistan, praising the nation’s untapped rugby potential. “Pakistani players have been blessed with plenty of rugby potential,” he remarked, underscoring his commitment to fostering talent and advancing the sport.
