One of Bollywood’s biggest award ceremonies, the much-awaited IIFA Awards 2016 are all set to commence today. As the countdown begins, celebrities have flown to Madrid, Spain where the award ceremony is scheduled to take place this year. This will be the 17th edition of IIFA which is going to be a four-day event starting with a press conference on June 23, followed by IIFA Rocks/MULA Fest (June 24) and the main awards night (June 25) while on the last day, that is June 26, the celebrities will ring in a Holi party.
This year’s IIFA holds special significance for the people of Pakistan as our very own Fawad Khan, who has taken India by storm with just two Bollywood films (Khoobsurat, Kapoor & Sons), is said to host IIFA Rocks alongside Karan Johar. The night will feature some special performances including that of renowned music director-composer-singer Pritam who will perform with Spanish artistes. Besides, National award-winning singer Monali Thakur and Papon will also take center stage while Kanika Kapoor with Benny Dayal and Neeti Mohan will perform popular numbers of Meet Brothers.
This year’s IIFA Awards will be hosted by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar who also hosted the ceremony in 2014 and had the audience in fits of laughter. The mega award night will feature live performances of Bollywood’s biggest stars including Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Sonakshi Sinha. At the IIFA Welcome Flashmob in Madrid, Sonakshi said, “My association with IIFA has been forged since I first joined the industry and it’s an event I look forward to every year. Madrid is a thrilling city, and I am looking forward to experiencing another spectacular IIFA in another amazing destination.”
What’s more, Bollywood diva Sridevi, who made the most successful comeback with English Vinglish in 2012, will be honoured with an award for Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema at IIFA 2016 for her brilliant performances in her acting career that spans over 40 years. Also, Frieda Pinto, who came to prominence after she starred in Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, will receive International Icon Award at the ceremony.
While Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar reached the destination on Monday, others including Shahid Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Athiya Shetty, Gulshan Grover, etc. flew to Madrid on Tuesday. Other big names to attend IIFA 2016 include Ranveer Singh, Sridevi, Boman Irani, Kabir Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, among many others.
