The prime minister deserves kudos for slashing the prices of electricity for domestic consumers by Rs7.41 per unit and for commercial users by Rs7.59 per unit. It is indeed a major relief for the poor people of this economically fragile country, which may trigger economic activities and give a boost to the industrial sector. But there are still many localities suffering from lengthy power cuts and the authorities remain reluctant to take any action against the defaulters. They treat both the defaulters and non-defaulters the same and have conducted severe loadshedding, punishing everyone instead of focusing on those who do not pay their bills.
Even those who are disconnected often resort to illegal connections, getting electricity that others pay for. The prime minister must direct the concerned authorities to take legal action against those who are not paying the bills. In the current sweltering weather, it is very difficult for the residents of the rural areas to survive amidst hours-long power outages.
