* Is the son of filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Ann.

* Has a sister, actress-writer Allyson Downey.

* Parents struggled with drugs and alcohol. Was allowed by his father to use drugs as a child. Battled addiction several times during his life before achieving sobriety in 2003.
