Selection bias

Cricket is not just a game but an emotion that connects every region of Pakistan. However, the squad selection for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, slated to start on March 16, has once again raised questions about the fairness of the selection process. Despite the PCB's claims of selecting players based on performance in PSL and domestic cricket, it seems like favouritism has taken the front seat instead of talent. Players like Shahnawaz Dahani, who has proved his worth by becoming the ‘Bowler of the Tournament’ in his first PSL season and consistent performances in domestic cricket, have been completely ignored. Similarly, Mushtaq Kalhoro, one of Sindh's top-performing all-rounders, with the most wickets in the President Cup 2025, was left out of the squad without any justification. This blind selection process is not only breaking the hopes of talented players but also creating a sense of disappointment among cricket fans, especially in underrepresented regions like Sindh. It is high time that the PCB takes notice of this injustice and brings a merit-based selection system that gives equal chances to every deserving player. The New Zealand series will not only test Pakistan's cricketing strength but also the integrity of our selection system.
