Women’s identity

If there is any logical sense behind the requirement of needing a husband’s name on the CNIC and the passport, I fail to see it. The prevailing law and practices regarding this unnecessary requirement is against the ‘inheritance right’ of an individual. This right has also been granted by Islam. Women are not a commodity for which they need a different tag for identification. The importance of a husband cannot be ignored but that does not mean that you snatch the real identity of a woman.

Maybe Nadra could use registered nikah forms as an alternative to CNICs with husbands’ names?
