ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday passed the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2025 empowering the finance committee of the House to decide about financial matters of parliamentarians and envisage increase in their salaries as already decided by the committee.
Already passed by the Senate, PMLN MNA Ms Romina Khurshid Alam moved the private member bill in the National Assembly which was passed by the House with majority. Now it would be returned to the Senate for passage with amendment. The sources said that the members of both the houses of parliament have already drawn increased salaries for January.
The Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on becoming an Act of the Parliament, shall authorize respective finance committees of two houses to take decision about financial matters of parliamentarians instead of the Federal Government. The bill shall amend the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Act, 1974. In Section 14B, the sentence ‘in proportion to the increase in the emoluments of the civil servants’. On becoming an Act of the Parliament after signed by the President, the decision would be implemented.
The statement of objects and reasons of the bill says that it grants autonomy and independence to the parliament to decide financial matters of their members given their onerous task of legislation and making federal government fully responsible to both houses of the parliament. Following passage of the bill, the Minister for Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nair Tarar said those MNAs who do not want an increase in their salaries and allowances should write to the Speaker’s Office.
Meanwhile, the speaker issued production orders of detained PTI MNA, Mian Ghous Muhammad.
