6th National Congress of Ophthalmology begins

PESHAWAR: The three-day 46th National Congress of Ophthalmology, alongside the 16th Khyber Eyecon, commenced here, bringing together leading ophthalmologists from across the country and around the world to discuss groundbreaking advancements in eye care.

Renowned ophthalmologist Prof Dr Daud Khan was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the event, which was organised under the auspices of the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan.

Dr Daud lauded the contributions of Pakistani eye specialists to global ophthalmology. “This congress is not just about academic discussions; it is about transforming patient care through innovation, research, and collaboration,” he said, emphasizing the need for continuous learning to keep pace with evolving technologies.

President of the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan, Prof Dr Salim Meher, highlighted that the conference would showcase pioneering research, with experts unveiling the latest techniques in diagnosis and treatment. Prof Dr Shafqat Ullah Khan Marwat, president of the society’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, noted that the event provided an invaluable platform for young ophthalmologists to engage with senior specialists and stay updated on emerging trends.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the conferral of the “Legend in Ophthalmology” award to Prof Dr. Ziaul Islam from Mardan in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research and clinical practice.

Several distinguished ophthalmologists were also honored with gold medals for their excellence, including Prof Dr Zafarul Islam, Prof. Dr. Mahfooz Hussain, Prof Dr Sumaira Altaf, Prof Dr Khwaja Khalid Shoaib, Dr Shahzad Saeed, Dr Zeeshan Kamil, Dr Muhammad Rashid, and Dr Munira Shakir.

The conference, featuring national and international experts, will continue over the next two days, focusing on cutting-edge advancements in ophthalmology and fostering collaboration to enhance eye care across Pakistan.
