Anurag Kashyap’s brand of volatile cinema, seen in films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Bombay Velvet, is here to stay and has given Bollywood a much-needed darker edge. Having stunned critics and fans with the first two Gangs of Wasseypur films, it comes as no surprise that a third film in the franchise has been announced. In fact, reports suggest that the film is going into production very soon.

Describing the upcoming film, writer and director Zeishan Quadri noted, “The first two installments of the Gangs of Wasseypur portrayed the events that occurred till 2002. The three-quel will tell what happened between 2003 and 2015.”

According to Quadri, the film will hit theatres by the end of the year.

Months away from release, like many of Kashyap’s films, Gangs of Wasseypur 3 also has its fair share of controversies. For instance, actual residents of Wasseypur are not pleased with the way the film has projected this particular area. One resident was quoted saying: “Crime in our locality actually increased after the first movie was released in 2012. The movie franchise has created a perception that Wasseypur is a haven for gangsters and criminals.”

While fans of gritty cinema wait for Gangs of Wasseypur 3’s release, all eyes are on Kashyap’s current production, Udta Punjab which has been courting controversy since the first look for the film was revealed. Though the film re-unites (onscreen) the pair of Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Shahid Kapoor for the first time since the two actors tied the knots with their respective spouses, it’s the plotline of the menace of drugs in Punjab along with the film’s expletive-laden script that has annoyed Indian censors and is the subject of a court petition.
