Like the recent past Pakistan rugby made inroads during the last year, both at national and international level. Rugby activities continued in the country throughout the year in one shape or the other under Pakistan Rugby Union(PRU).

The remarkable success during the preceding year was a result of collective efforts of PRU under a dedicated team of PRU chief Chaudhry Arif Saeed.

PRU, no doubt got unwavering support from all its units whether associations or departments. The rugby body as such have achieved significant milestones, fostering the growth of rugby across the country.

Rugby in Pakistan, which is now gaining popularity among masses, has been steadily gaining momentum, thanks to the visionary leadership of PRU’s top officials.

Besides PRU President Fawzi Khawaja (Chairman) has been dynamic in particular through their experience and commitment.

Thus rugby has become as one of Pakistan’s most professionally managed sports.

During the last year PRU achieved several milestones, including the successful organisation of international and domestic tournaments, grassroots development programs, and the promotion of women’s rugby. The Union’s focus on professionalism and inclusivity has earned the trust of World Rugby and Asia Rugby, as well as the confidence of players, coaches, and fans across the nation.

At the annual general council meeting held in Lahore, PRU officials highlighted their accomplishments in 2024 and outlined their ambitious plans for 2025. The meeting, attended by prominent figures such as Treasurer Muhammad Haroon, Asia Rugby Vice President Rizwan Malik, and provincial representatives, was a testament to the Union’s collaborative approach. The PRU’s emphasis on accountability and transparency was evident as the minutes of previous meetings and financial accounts were unanimously approved.

In 2024, Pakistan’s rugby teams made strides at international events, including the Nepal Sevens. Domestically, the ninth Servis Tyres Rugby League saw fierce competition among clubs, showcasing the growing talent pool in Pakistan. Women’s rugby also gained significant traction, with events held nationwide, particularly in South Punjab. WAPDA’s women’s team clinched the gold at the 4th Women’s National Championship, while the men’s team won their first Parco National Rugby Championship title.

The PRU’s partnership with Total PARCO brought a full-time international Coach Development Manager to Pakistan, further strengthening the sport’s technical foundation. The Union also held under-19 rugby events, fostering young talent and ensuring a steady pipeline of future players.

No doubt PRU President’s dedication to rugby has been instrumental in driving its growth. With over two decades of leadership experience, Saeed’s efforts were recently acknowledged with his election as President of the Pakistan Olympic Association for 2025-2029.

Asia Rugby Vice President Rizwan Malik, a former national team coach and provincial rugby leader, has added further credibility to Pakistan Rugby. His election to this prestigious position underscores the global recognition of Pakistan’s rugby potential.

Looking ahead, the PRU aims to expand its footprint by focusing on women’s rugby, youth development, and increased participation in international events. The 10th Servis Tyres Rugby League, currently underway, reflects the Union’s commitment to nurturing competitive rugby at the club level.

Plans are in place to enhance the league’s structure and introduce more opportunities for women’s and junior teams.

The Union’s collaboration with World Rugby and Asia Rugby is set to bring more resources and expertise to Pakistan. This partnership, coupled with the PRU’s steadfast leadership, ensures a bright future for rugby in the country.
