I am heartbroken as I write about the tragic accident involving a boat carrying immigrants on their journey from Mauritania to Spain. At least, 44 Pakistanis lost their lives in the middle of the ocean while pursuing a better future. This is not just the loss of lives, but the destruction of forty-four families. In the past few months alone, hundreds of Pakistanis have perished in their attempt to escape the hardships of their homeland. After every such tragedy, the authorities chair a meeting and asks for a report. The accident becomes a top trend in electronic, print, and social media. But after a few days of outrage, everything returns to normal until another tragedy strikes. When will we see real action? Who is responsible for the deaths of my fellow Pakistanis? When will the government succeed in providing a brighter future for our youth? I urge the authorities to take serious, sustained action to combat human trafficking in Pakistan.
