The CII’s recent recommendations regarding women rights have evoked reactions that have even asked for it to be disbanded. In fact, the council is not the source of our problems. There is a difference of opinion in Muslim societies on religious tenets and our modern-day needs.
The only way to resolve religious controversies is for learned religious scholars to develop a consensus on the application of religious commands as per the prevailing environment.

This refers to the news report, ‘CII bill allows husband to mildly beat wife’ (May 26). The CII’s proposal allowing men to lightly beat their wives is uncalled for. Do we need the model ‘Protection of Women’s Rights bill proposed by the Council of Islamic Ideology? For the CII, it seems only women need to be straightened out.
For the past few days countless religious scholars have argued that nothing in the bill is against Islam or in any way anti-women. Do they fail to understand our society at all? When you allow a man to beat his wife lightly, who defines ‘lightly’ for them?
