This letter refers to the article ‘IMF’s failed prescription’ (November 15, 2024) by Yousuf Nazar. The writer argues that the IMF’s conditions reduce deficits and stabilise the economy but also deepen inequality and poverty, fail to address underlying structural weaknesses and stimulate sustainable growth.
The IMF’s mandate is to bail out countries ont the verge of sovereign default. To this extent, it has always been successful. It is not fair to criticise it for poverty alleviation, inequality, growth and economic development. For this purpose, one has to visit a different shop.
