KARACHI: The former speaker of the National Assembly and MNA Dr Fahmida Mirza has appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan to take cognizance of what she described a sheer show of aggression by the police force in District Badin against her husband and former Sindh home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.
Speaking at an urgently-called press conference at her residence here on Tuesday, the former National Assembly speaker said that she had serious concerns about the safety and security of her husband taking refuge at the Mirza Farm House in Badin. She said that provision of water and food supplies had been prevented from reaching the Mirza Farm House.
Fahimda Mirza urged the provincial authorities concerned that all criminal cases lodged against Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and his supporters who were in fact loyalists of the Pakistan People’s Party should be withdrawn at the earliest. She said that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, being the provincial chief executive, was fully responsible for the adverse law and order situation in her hometown Badin.
She appealed to the Federation that it should nominate nominate more eligible and qualified officials as being inspector-general of police and chief secretary in Sindh province. She desired that senior govt officials having strong will-power should be posted as IG of police and chief secretary in Sindh.
The MNA from Badin district said that she had been elected to National Assembly by dwellers of Badin so she could not resign as a lawmaker in lower house of parliament on the whim and wish of any one. Dr Mirza announced on the occasion that she was going to Badin herself in order to lend support to party workers there in their testing times.
She said the undesirable law and order situation, which had been created in Badin had been completely unprecedented as even during past dictatorial regimes, such adverse peace conditions had not been created in the district of Sindh. She said the Dr Zulfiqar Mirza being

former Sindh home minister didn’t deserve such harsh and unbecoming treatment at the hands of provincial government of PPP in Sindh.
Former National Assembly speaker said that she had kept silence for long time on adverse situation of Badin but lastly she was compelled to address a press conference keeping in view of gravity of situation there. She alleged that provincial police force in Sindh had become fully politicised.
She said that for last three days the environment of police operation had unduly being created in Badin by calling into the town the police personnel reinforcements from the entire province. She said that such police officials should be posted in Badin, which should not be involved in politics of any sort. She said that criminal cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act had been lodged against Dr Zulfiqar Mirza in contravention of court orders. She said that police had resorted to firing there in contravention of court orders.
She said that police should better refrain from resorting to raiding on residences of party’s supporters in Badin otherwise the entire population of the town would court arrest. She feared that such a situation was deliberately being developed in Badin, which could lead to colossal loss in the province.
She said that she had written letters to all the relevant govt authorities including IG of Sindh police for provision of security to her but to no effect as in such an undesirable situation she had been left with no option but to recall memories martyred leader of PPP Benazir Bhutto. She said that she and her family had actively waged struggle for the cause of restoration of democracy but at present she had been meted out very harsh treatment. She said she had joined PPP in year 1997 when the party had been difficult times.
