This letter refers to the article ‘Is nuclear the answer to our energy SOS?’ (August 18, 2024) by Dr Khaqan Hassan Najeeb. The writer has rightly pointed to the fact that the inefficiency and mismanagement in the power sector have unleashed a crisis where consumer buying power and government credibility are both at stake now. While delineating the pros of nuclear energy, the writer has successfully built up a case for using nuclear power for electricity generation rather than opting for more expensive, inconsistent resources like imported coal, gas or oil.
However, an ordinary consumer like me would like to know more about the nuclear option’s economic viability and efficiency from other power industry experts. Though the people are often not considered a serious stakeholder when it comes to economic and energy policymaking, it is high time that we had a debate that allows both the people and policymakers to learn what choices we have before a final decision is made. Otherwise, the authorities might make some suboptimal choice when it comes to electricity generation, whose consequences will be borne by the nation for years to come.
