This refers to the letters ‘IPP scandal’ (August 9, 2024) by Imtiaz Akhter and ‘IPP tyranny’ (August 4, 2024) by Engr Asim Nawab. The PM is absolutely right in stating that to survive and become a productive nation-state, we must focus on improving the efficiencies in our power and energy and taxation spectrums. For this, it is important that the issue of capacity charges payments to the IPPs is discussed and resolved to the satisfaction of both stakeholders (the government and the IPPs). We cannot ignore the IPPs nor sideline them; the IPPs are here and for real.

The IPPs should be at the forefront of restructuring as far as capacity payments and over-payments are concerned. The PM is requested to please summon a meeting with these IPPs, especially the ones partly or wholly owned and controlled by the government, and begin sincere, productive discussions so that good news can reach the nation in due course.
