Politicians seem to have found the trick of hiding behind democracy to protect their ill-gotten wealth. Democracy never was and never will be in danger even when the poverty level crosses the 50 percent mark, with ordinary citizens lacking access to healthcare, education or justice. However, the minute there is the slightest chance or demand of accountability of the rich and the privileged, we hear our politicians banding together to protect democracy. It seems democracy has become synonymous with corruption in our country. The Panama leaks is yet another example of corrupt politicians posturing together to protect democracy.
The ruling elite should realise that this is the time to come clean, confess their mistakes, seek forgiveness from the nation and promise to move forward in the right direction. Unless our politicians decide to root out the menace of corruption, we won’t be able to gain any respect in the world. The time has come to stop trying to fool us all the time and do something to fix the rotten system.
