LAHORE: Former Pakistan fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has vehemently criticised the appointment of Waqar Younis in any capacity at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
In a scathing interview with The News, Nawaz termed the decision “shameful” given Younis’s past failures as captain, bowling coach, and head coach of the national team. Nawaz also pointed to Younis’s alleged involvement in a scandal, asserting that it should disqualify him from any role in cricket administration. The former pacer directed his criticism at PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, questioning the rationale behind such a decision.
While emphasising his own detachment from any desire for a position within the PCB, Nawaz expressed his concern for the future of Pakistan cricket. He suggested that the presence of too many coaches is detrimental to the development of players, who should focus on individual hard work.
In stark contrast to his criticism of Younis, Nawaz lauded the achievements of Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem. He praised Nadeem’s unwavering determination and resilience in overcoming adversity, and attributed his success to sheer talent and hard work rather than coaching or government support.
