This refers to the letter ‘Real change or new face’ (August 9, 2024) by Kamal Hyat. I fully support the pragmatic views expressed by the writer on the recent ouster of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. I think that too many people in Pakistan, including people in official circles and in the national media, are making too much of the events in Bangladesh. They are portraying it as some earthshaking revolution that will suddenly change everything and also, in some way, negate the facts and events of 1971.
I think that it is advisable for us to remain calm and neutral and just wait and see how the present, worrisome situation resolves itself in Bangladesh. We should also not dismiss the possibility of Sheikh Hasina’s return. Given our own weak political and economic conditions, let us hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
