GROS ISLET (Caribbean Islands): India inflicted a 24-run defeat on Australia in a high-scoring game to set up an intriguing T20 World Cup semi-final against England.


The defeat, Australia’s second in as many games left their fate to the last Super Eight match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Any of the of three teams could end up at No 2 behind India in Group 1 to play against South Africa in the other semi-finals.

It was Rohit Shama’s (92) blazing knock that set up India’s win at the Daren Sammy National Stadium. His innings of high substance propelled India to 205 for 5 with Australia managing 181 in reply on a slow track before begging bowled out.

Rohit led his team from the front with exciting display of stroke-making that saw him punishing every loose ball, striking eight sixes and seven fours during his 41-ball stay at the wicket. He also took his six-hitting tally in 20 internationals to over 200 in the process.

Others, Suryakumar Yadav (31), Shivam Dube (28) and Hardik Pandya (27 not out) chipped in well to pose a challenging target for Australia to chase. Michael Starc (2-45) and, Marcus Stoinis (2-56) bowled well. Australia lost David Warner (6) early with his opening partner Travis Head (76) handling most of the batting pressure. Captain Mitchell Marsh (37) also played well before he was plucked in the thin air by jumping Axer Patel in one of the riper of catches that turned the tide in India’s favour. By the time he had already managed 81-run stand for the second wicket with Head. Australia lost the way once Marsh departed with none other staying long to ensure Australia’s second win.

For India Arshdeep Singh (3-37) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-24) were impressive. Rohit Sharma was adjudged Man of the Match for his sparkling innings.
