PESHAWAR: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Arbab Waseem Hayat on Friday won the closely contested PK-8 by-election against Malik Tamash Khan of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), according to unofficial and unconfirmed results.
Hayat bagged 11,781 votes while Tamash secured 10,789 votes. Ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shahzad Khan could only manage to get 9,347 votes to come on the third position.
The seat was vacated due to the death of a PML-N lawmaker.
Out of total 97 polling stations, 41 were declared extremely sensitive, 47 sensitive and 11 normal.
More than 5,000 police personnel were deployed for security at the polling stations during the by-election, said a report of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Home Department.
Contingents of Pakistan Army were also present at all polling stations. Arms and explosives were not allowed in and outside the polling stations and Section-144 had been imposed in the constituency.
