ISLAMABAD: Rawalpindi Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate Adil Sarwar Sial sentenced Telecom member Muhammad Umar Malik to 15 days in jail and a fine of Rs2,000 for misbehaviour.

The police took the accused into custody and transferred him to the lock-up. However, later the court suspended the order of punishment on a petition filed by the accused and ordered him to be careful in future and warned that contempt of court would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“In the future your behaviour should be subject to the Constitution and law,” the judge said and ordered his release on a bond of Rs100,000 and also directed him to file an appeal within fifteen days. The officer was released from the lock-up before being transferred to the Adiala jail after the court order.

It has been learnt that Secretary to the Advisory Committee of the Federal Cabinet, Muhammad Umar Malik, a member of the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Telecom, appeared in the court on Saturday as a plaintiff in a case filed at the Airport police station under charges, including check dishonour and fraud. His tone was bitter and threatening during the hearing.

He said that he was a government servant and could not wait for long. The judge ordered him to fasten his collar button and asked him the reason for inappropriate behaviour, but he refused to reply. Then the court issued him a show-cause notice and ordered him to file a reply during court hours but he refused to receive the notice. In this way, he insulted the court.

The court sentenced him to 15 days in prison and a fine of Rs2,000. While applying to the court through his lawyer, he apologised unconditionally for his action and on the assurance of not repeating such actions in future, the court accepted the request for suspension of the sentence.
