ISLAMABAD: A meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board has been convened on Wednesday (today) on the instructions of prime minister to discuss the export of sugar.
According to sources, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain will preside over the meeting in Lahore, in which export of sugar will be reviewed in the light of prime minister’s orders.
The Sugar Advisory Board will review the status of overall reserves. Commerce Minister Jam Kamal and other officials will attend the meeting. The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has been invited to participate in it.
The prime minister had recently issued orders to review the export of sugar. The prime minister has directed that the export of sugar should be considered on the condition that the local needs are met.
It should be remembered that last month in the two meetings of Sugar Advisory Board, no decision could be taken to export the commodity. Exports were linked to stabilization of prices in the domestic market. The mills have demanded permission to export 1.5 million metric tonnes of sugar and 500,000 tonnes in the first phase.
