Culture shift

There is no denying that where a culture of reading and writing exists, we see excellence in the education system and significant contributions to academia. Unfortunately, in the Pakistani education system, there is a lack of a reading and writing culture from elementary to higher education. The main reasons behind this fragile education system include the state’s lethargic approach towards providing quality education for all and the stagnant and unproductive syllabi that hardly encourage a culture of reading and writing. Our education system focuses more on rote learning and memorization, trapping students in a poor cycle of grading rather than promoting critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to meet the demands of the 21st century.

It is imperative for the incumbent government and other stakeholders to take this matter seriously and emphasize the provision of quality education. They must address and eliminate the flaws and problems within the education system. It is the need of the hour to promote a culture of reading and writing throughout the entire educational structure. This shift will make our education system more productive and produce students who are critical thinkers, good readers and proficient writers.
