IGP wants committee formed to modernise police health facilities

Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon has reviewed the medical facilities and medicines available in police hospitals and dispensaries established in Sindh and gave necessary instructions to improve the facilities.

He issues these instructions while chairing a meeting at the Central Police Office Karachi on Monday, officials said. The meeting was attended by the additional IG finance and welfare, the DIGs of headquarters, finance, traffic, MS Police Hospital Garden South, and project director IT face-to-face while the DIG Hyderabad and MS Police Hospital Hyderabad participated through video link.

The meeting was briefed by AIG welfare on details such as medical facilities provided by the police hospitals, renovation of the hospitals, medical equipment and budget of the hospitals. He said 1000 patients are getting free treatment and quality medicines daily from the OPD of the Police Hospital Garden Karachi and 250 patients from the Police Hospital Hyderabad.

IGP Memon said our hospitals should be excellent and exceptional in terms of OPD, doctors’ services, diagnosis of diseases, delivery of quality medicines and diagnostic services. He directed that a committee comprising police officers from the medical sector should be formed to modernize emergency medical facilities and the OPDs. This committee will ensure the process of suggestions and consultations with the private medical sector regarding the availability of quality medicines, their distribution and provision of other medical facilities.

He said it should be possible to provide experienced doctors, quality medicines and diagnostic and the diagnostic facility in the police dispensaries established in the districts.

He further said a comprehensive mechanism should be devised for procurement and supply of quality medicines for the police hospitals in Karachi and Hyderabad and dispensaries on the pattern of the SIUT and Indus Hospital, under which special attention should also be paid to all the rules and regulations related to the purchase of medicines.

Earlier, IGP Memon presided over a video link meeting regarding reforms in police stations. DIG Asim Qaimkhani briefed the meeting about the merger and addition of police stations.

We are trying to strengthen policing, including administrative and financial matters of police stations, under an integrated strategy, said the IGP and added that a final report on the merger of police stations with low crime rates should be submitted. There is a need to change the infrastructure of the police stations, he said. Moreover, he said, there is a need to make officers and officials directly associated with the police stations responsible.
