A con woman who has a history of tricking people and making away with their money got arrested again in Maine.
The woman, Marianne Smyth, is an American. In a legal case decided in 2019, the woman was found guilty of taking almost $70,000 from Johnathan Walton, who produces reality TV shows. She pretended to be a wealthy person from Ireland who was about to inherit a lot of money.
“This is something I’ve been working hard on for the past seven years and even as that sentence escapes my mouth, seven years, I was beginning to believe it would never happen,” he said. “So I’m thrilled.”
This wasn't the first time she had gotten into trouble. In the past, she was accused of stealing $200,000 from her workplace in Los Angeles, writing checks that couldn't be cashed in Tennessee, and stealing in Florida.
Smyth was arrested in Bingham, Maine, on Feb. 23.
She also pretended to be famous people, like actress Jennifer Aniston and Los Angeles District Attorney named Heba Matta.
She also has been accused of cheating tenants out of money and faces charges in the UK for similar scams.
Federal prosecutors have filed a plea for her extradition. On March 7th, a US judge determined that Smyth would remain in custody and would not be released on bail until a hearing is held about her extradition.
