In a strange turn of events, the PTI and the PPP have joined hands to pressurise Nawaz Sharif on the Panama leaks. Interestingly, till now Imran Khan had spared no opportunity to call Asif Zardari and the PPP highly corrupt and inefficient. This so-called alliance has a one-point agenda – to get rid of Nawaz by any means. Once their demand for the appointment of a judicial commission under the CJP was met they started objecting to the ToRs of the inquiry. This despite the fact that the TORs covered an across-the-board investigation – including money invested in offshore companies.
The PPP is vainly trying to restore its image by creating a hullaballoo on the Panama leaks. Does the party realise that Imran Khan’s PTI had mainly cut into their and the ANP’s vote bank to secure parliamentary seats. The PTI has also started his thinly-attended anti-corruption rally through Sindh – the PPP’s heartland. Imran has rightly given up his move to stage a dharna at Raiwind without the support of the ‘umpire’. The PTI itself is facing internal fights. The PM enjoys two-thirds majority in parliament and there is no chance of a mass movement in sight in the country at present. The PPP and the PTI should wait for the 2018 elections and not destabilise the country.
