ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday appointed former interior secretary Tasnim Noorani as the party’s chief election commissioner while dissolving the PTI’s Election Tribunal after it had completed its job.
The appointment was made on the recommendation of the PTI Election Tribunal’s Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmad and Yusuf Gabol, whom Imran thanked for their painstaking work on the intra party election petitions. Noorani, according to a statement by PTI’s Media Centre, will enjoy full powers: he may carry out a membership drive and make electoral rolls and the powers to form a committee that may assist him in doing his job.
He will be meeting the PTI chairman within the next few days to discuss with him the nomination of other members of PTI EC.The CEC, after completion of the electoral rolls and election procedure, will inform the party chairman about the appropriate time for the conduct of the next intra-party elections.
The first-ever intra party polls of PTI were conducted under then chief election commissioner Hamid Khan. The exercise was marred by glaring irregularities, forcing the PTI tribunal to reduce the office term of the elected members to two years.
As the party moves forward towards preparing for and holding the next intra party elections, Imran stated that the PTI Election Tribunal had fulfilled its tasks and thereby stands dissolved with immediate effect.
