The Biannual Report of Judicial Statistics for the period from July to December 2023 show that the number of pending cases has risen 3.9 per cent, reaching a total of 2.26 million cases pending.

The vast majority of the pending cases, around 82 per cent, are at the district judiciary level. Legislative changes, administrative restructuring, and increasing the number of judges may help tackle this backlog.
