Navigating the dense winter fog in Pakistan presents considerable challenges, particularly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where visibility can plummet to as low as 100 meters. This adversely affects air travel, leading to flight delays and diversions. The dense fog also contributes to road accidents, causing injuries, deaths, and substantial economic losses. Implementing advanced technologies like Ground-Based Augmentation (GBA) and Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (ASMGCS) holds promise in improving runway visibility, thereby reducing flight cancellations and accidents.
Public awareness campaigns promoting safe driving in such conditions and the immediate implementation of robust measures, including reflective markings, street lighting, and fog detection systems on highways, are also crucial to preventing unnecessary losses.
