Scientists have uncovered a way for humans to communicate with aliens and, if successful, even put an end to an intergalactic conflict.
Scholars have assembled the most extensive "science of alien language" to date, with the goal of ensuring that any communication with extraterrestrial life is interpreted as benign rather than hostile.
A 2020 study published in the "Astrophysical Journal" put the number of "advanced" civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy alone at about 36, but finding or getting in touch with any of them has proved unattainable for humanity thus far.
According to the Times, a new article that "explorethe potential nature of a non-terrestrial intelligence with linguistic capabilities" was put together by 25 top academics in the fields of linguistics, anthropology, philosophy, computer science, biology, and animal communications.
Contributors to the article also include American political and social scientist Noam Chomsky, dubbed as "the father of modern linguistics."
The volume's editor, astrobiologist Dr Douglas Vakoch told the paper: "I'm optimistic. I think it's realistic that we could in our lifetimes get a message through Seti (search for extraterrestrial intelligence) programmes or send out messages that could someday get a reply."
