ISLAMABAD: Prices of urea have skyrocketed in the country. In just one week, the price of a 50-kg bag of urea has increased by up to Rs1,000.
According to government sources, during the recent week, the price of a 50- kg bag of urea in Peshawar has increased by Rs1,000, in Gujranwala by Rs500, Sukkur Rs300, Larkana Rs195, Lahore Rs100 and Sargodha Rs67.
The price of a 50-kg sack of urea has reached Rs5,000 in Peshawar and Gujranwala, the highest in the country.
The rates in Hyderabad reached Rs4,899, Sukkur Rs4,800, Larkana Rs4,060, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad and Bahawalpur Rs4,000, Multan Rs3,950, Sargodha Rs3,867 and Lahore Rs3,800.
Sources say the prices have increased due to a difference in demand and supply of urea in the country. Factors like hoarding and smuggling are also reasons for the hike in prices.
According to government sources, the caretaker government has decided to import 200,000 metric tons of urea to meet the requirements of the country. Prices are expected to drop after it.
