An anti-terrorism court (ATC) has awarded a collective sentence of 31-year imprisonment to a street criminal on charges of encounter, possession of illicit arms and terrorism.

Muhammad Ahmed was found guilty of encountering with police with an intention to kill and causing terror within the jurisdiction of the Nabi Bux police station earlier this year.

The ATC-XIII judge, who presided over the trial in the judicial complex inside the central prison, announced the verdict reserved after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs130,000 on the convict. In case of default, he would have to undergo an additional 15-month imprisonment.

"The whole property of the above named accused Muhammad Ahmed is forfeited to the government," the judge ruled, adding that all the sentences awarded to the convict shall run concurrently.

The judge also extended the benefit of the Section 382 (time he has spent in prison since his arrest to be deducted from his term) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to the convict.

Two separate cases were lodged under the sections 324 (attempted murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 23-A (I) of the Sindh Arms Act read with the Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Nabi Bux police station.
