LAHORE: The troubles we are facing these days are because of the cumulative impact of several injustices, which have become a norm in our society. But the fight for social justice is strongly opposed by entrenched vested interests.

Social justice refers to the fair and just distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society. It involves ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has access to the same rights, resources, and opportunities. Social justice aims to create a society where all individuals are treated equitably and have the ability to fully participate and benefit from the resources and advantages available.

The impact of social justice on the economy, employment, women, and poverty cannot be underscored. Socially just policies can lead to a more inclusive economy, where marginalized communities have access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. When more people are able to participate in the economy, it can lead to increased productivity and economic growth.

These measures can help reduce income and wealth inequality by implementing progressive taxation, minimum wage laws, and social safety programmes. A more equal distribution of resources can create a more stable economic environment.

Social justice promotes equal opportunities in employment, regardless of factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. This leads to a diverse and skilled workforce, fostering innovation and creativity within industries. Social justice advocates for fair labour practices, workers’ rights, and workplace safety regulations. Ensuring decent working conditions and fair wages can improve overall job satisfaction and productivity.

Social justice initiatives often focus on empowering women through education, access to healthcare, and economic opportunities. When women are empowered, they can contribute significantly to the economy by participating in the workforce, starting businesses, and investing in their communities.

Social justice advocates for gender equality, promoting policies that address issues like the gender pay gap and gender-based discrimination. Achieving gender equality can enhance economic productivity and social well-being.

Social justice measures ensure that marginalised communities, including those living in poverty, have access to essential resources such as education, healthcare, and housing. By addressing these basic needs, social justice can break the cycle of poverty.

Policies like unemployment benefits, food assistance programmes, and affordable healthcare can prevent people from falling deeper into poverty during times of economic hardship. These safety nets provide crucial support for vulnerable populations.

Social justice and economic growth go hand in hand; one cannot exist without the other. We have seen enterprises growing above normal pace which are equal opportunity employers and which follow all decent social norms.

Our thinking on social justice should refocus on work. This is the only way to take people above the poverty line and give them a chance to be a partner in the solution. Civil society will have to oppose social injustice as an inevitable feature of our society.

Social justice is in fact a realisation by society that it is sensitive to the needs of others. Every member of the society should genuinely accept that he/she would share the resources available in the country with others.

In short, social justice plays a vital role in shaping a fair and equitable society. By promoting equal opportunities, empowering marginalised communities, and reducing disparities, social justice initiatives can have a positive impact on the economy, employment, women, and poverty, fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society for all.
